'Eaters Make Their Way to Seattle for MPSF Indoor Championships

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team heads to Seattle, Wash., this weekend for the MPSF Championships, Feb. 23-24.

The two-day conference meet will be held at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor for the 16th consecutive season. The Anteaters have 18 individuals entered in 10 different events. Action is set to get underway Friday with the weight throw at 12 p.m. On Saturday, the shot put and high jump kick things off at 10:30 a.m., while the events on the track are slated for an 11 a.m. start.

Twenty-two of the top teams in the West are set to compete at the 2018 MPSF Indoor Championships. The group, which is comprised of members of the Big West, Pac-12 and West Coast Conferences, features five teams ranked in the latest USTFCCCA Top-25, including No. 2 USC and No. 5 Oregon.

SETTING THE STANDARD
Senior Persis William-Mensah has continued to raise the bar in the short sprints, bettering her own school records in both the 60m and 200m. For the fourth year in a row, the Costa Mesa native established a new 60m standard at UCI as she ran a personal-best 7.34 (7.38 converted) at the season-opening Lumberjack Team Challenge on Jan. 19. William-Mensah went on to top her 200m record for the third consecutive year at the Don Kirby Invitational on Feb. 9, where she clocked in at 24.19 seconds (24.26 converted).

The current 'Eaters have combined to produce 24 marks that rank among the top-10 in UCI's indoor history, including 14 that have been established this year. In addition, seniors Persis William-Mensah (60m, 200m) and Simone Buchanan (400m) own the school record in their respective events.

UC Irvine was last in action at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., Feb. 9-10. Persis William-Mensah highlighted the meet for the Anteaters with a school-record 24.26 in the 200m. She finished 13th among an elite field of 107 competitors. William-Mensah was the fastest among fellow Big West members as nine of the top-12 individual finishers were from the Pac-12, including eight from then No. 3 Oregon.

Hope Bushnell added lifetime-bests in the 60m (7.57) and 200m (24.50) to put her at No. 2 in the UCI record books in both events. Mikayla Scott also registered her best 200m time of the season at 25.24, which ranks fifth in school history, while Julia Sambvani cracked the top-10 at 25.56 seconds. Scott went on to notch a personal-record 57.03 in the 400m.

In the 60m hurdles, Mychal Robinson was the top qualifier out of the prelims, running a lifetime-best 8.64. She bettered that mark by .01 seconds in the semis where she finished ninth, and one spot shy of advancing to the finals. Robinson jumped to No. 3 in program history.

Elizabeth Akindele continued to make strides in the shot put with a personal-record 45-10.5 (12th). Akindele ranks third on UC Irvine's all-time charts behind only Alisha Misiaita and Itos Aikhionbare.

Jones placed 11th overall at the UW Invitational with a personal-record 8.69, which ranks fourth in program history. Robinson was also the top qualifier in the prelims before finishing ninth in the semifinal with a lifetime-best 8.63 at the Don Kirby Invitational. She currently sits at No. 3 in the record books.
