Quezada, Patenaude Earn Big West Accolades
October 08, 2018 | Men's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer had its best open to Big West play since 2010 and got the Big West Player of the Week backing on the offensive and defensive ends.
Sophomore Alvaro Quezada and fifth-year keeper Greg Patenaude each took home their first career weekly honors helping UCI open conference play with a victory for the first time since 2010 while being the only program to take hom all six available points in Big West play.
Quezada was instrumental in four of the five Anteater goals from the week assisting on two goals Wednesday in the win at UC Riverside, the first two-assist match of 2018 for UCI, and adding to that Saturday night in a 2-0 victory over Sac State with the game-winning goal, his second of the season, and an assist on the insurance strike to push him to the top of the Big West in the category now with six.
Patenaude, who has played all but one half in his senior campaign earned win Nos. 9 and 10 of his career. He stopped nine shots along the way giving him 41 on the year, and picked up one shutout, his Big West-leading fifth of the year, and was 11 seconds from a second in Wednesday's matchup. Patenaude lowered his goals-against-average to 0.93 which ranks third in the Big West.
The honor was the first of either player's career and first on either side of the ball in 2018 for the Anteaters. UCI scored five such awards in 2017 including one sweep, and its the seventh sweep since the introduction of offensive and defensive accolades. Patenaude is the first Anteater keeper to make the grade since Michael Breslin did so in 2014.
The 'Eaters are flying high with an 8-4-1 record this season and a 2-0-0 conference mark. The road gets treacherous this week with a trip to No. 16 UC Davis on Wednesday before welcoming in UC Santa Barbara next Saturday night.
