IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer opened 2017 at Cal giving up a late strike to fall, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
Thr Anteaters (0-1) came out firing with three of the first four shots of the match, but Cal (1-0) got the first goal home in the 19th minute to put the 'Eaters down, 1-0.
UCI responded in the 32nd minute with an equalizer on a penalty kick deposited by
Jessica Miclat. That would tie up the match at 1-1 heading into the half, and
Maddie Newsom registered her first save late in the period.
Both squads produced opportunities early in he second half including a second shot on goal from
Shelby Lee.
The Bears found another goal in the 69th minute on Abigail Kim's second tally of the match making it 2-1.
The 'Eaters tried to equalize late on shots from
Serena Camacho and
Sara Young, but could not find the back of the net falling in the opener, 2-1.
Newsom finished with three saves in net as Cal took the shot advantage, 9-7, but UCI earned four of the five corner kicks on the evening.
The 'Eaters return to the road for its next match, Friday, Aug. 25, at Arizona starting at 7:00 p.m.
