TUCSON, Ariz. --- UC Irvine and Arizona put on a defensive clinic Friday night at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium playing to a scoreless draw.
The defense was on full blast in the first half where the squads combined for just one shot and nothing on target.
Arizona (1-0-1) found a bit of a groove with eight second-half shots as did
Noel Baham who fired the match's first shot on target in the 72nd minute. Sophomore keeper
Maddie Newsom stood taller making two clutch saves in the 79th minute to keep things even and push the match into overtime.
Arizona added a shot on goal in each of the overtime frames, but nothing by Newsom as she sewed up her first clean sheet of the year to make it a 0-0 draw.
UCI finished with three shots, two from Baham, while Gabi Stoian of Arizona led all players with four shots as UofA totaled 14.
UC Irvine completes its season-opening road trip with a record of 0-1-1. The Anteaters return home for the next three matches beginning with Portland on Monday, Aug. 28 with the match starting at 7:00 p.m.
