Kelsey Thornton Post Career-High Five Goals To Lift UC Irvine Over Hartwick, 11-7

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Reigning Big West Player of the Week Kelsey Thornton continued her impressive senior season with a career-high five goals in No. 6 UC Irvine's 11-7 victory over No. 18 Hartwick at the Wolverine Invitational held at the Canham Natatorium.
Thornton's five goals are tied for seventh in the UCI single game records. She now has 25 on the season which is third on the team.
Mary Brooks added two goals, while Corrina Toledo, Reagan Castillo, McKenna Mitchell and Cara Borkovec each pitched in a goal in the victory.
Jenna Phreaner and Riley Shaw split time in the cage today.
Kelsey Thornton started the UCI scoring at 4:12 then Mary Brooks added another at 2:09, but the Anteaters slow started showed them trailing Hartwick, 4-2 after the first period.
Things changed dramatically in the second period as UCI would notch five goals, three by Thornton, the last with five seconds to send UCI in to halftime with a 7-6 lead. Before Thornton's last second shot, Raegan Castillo scored at the 3:54 mark to give UCI its first lead of the game 6-5.
Only one goal was scored by either team in the third period when Corinna Toledo put one in the cage at 7:13, 8-6.
Harwick scored first in the final period to draw within 8-7, but UCI would score the last three goals of the game by McKenna Mitchell (4:08), Cara Borkovec (3:44) and Thornton again at 2:21.
The Anteaters return to action at 3:40 p.m. PT today when they take on Bucknell.
