No. 6 UC Irvine Powered By Pink In 14-10 Win

IRVINE, Calif. -- No. 6 UC Irvine started the Barbara Kalbus Invitational with a 14-10 win over No. 12 San Diego State at the Anteater Aquatics Center Friday.
The Anteaters got off to a quick start scoring the first five goals, including the first two by Kelsey Thornton.
UCI would own a 6-1 lead after the first period and would start the second quarter with a goal by McKenna Mitchell. A goal by Corrina Toledo put UCI ahead 8-3 at the break.
With UCI leading 10-3 in the third period, SDSU rallied, scoring four in a row to narrow the gap to 10-7. Mary Brooks stopped the momentum with a goal with five seconds remaining in the period. Each team would score three in the final stanza, including two more by Thornton to secure the win.
Senior Kelsey Thornton led all players with four goals, which matches her career-high. Mary Brooks followed with three goals and Gabby Pierandozzi and Corrina Toledo each added two goals. Julie Swieca, Cara Borkovec and McKenna Mitchell rounded out the scoring for the Anteaters.
Riley Shaw recorded six saves in goal for UCI.
UCI will play No. 3 UCLA tomorrow at 11:45 a.m. at the Anteater Aquatics Center.
