SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's basketball team used a total team effort to upend Cal Poly, 74-71, in overtime Saturday evening at Mott Athletics Center.
Five 'Eaters scored in double figures, led by the senior trio of Irene Chavez, Shereen Sutherland and Brittany Glassow. Chavez finished with a season-high 17 points as she went 8-for-8 from the free throw line, while adding six rebounds including a crucial offensive board late in overtime.
Sutherland registered her fourth double-double of the year with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Glassow, who was coming off a career-high 18 points at CSUN, chipped in 10 points and seven boards.
Freshman Brooke Bayman also had a season-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds and a team-best six assists. Sophomore Andee Ritter rounded out the group with 11 points.
UCI shot 46.3 percent from the field and an impressive 85 percent (17-20) from the free throw line.
The Anteaters had not played an overtime game since 2015 but it did not show as they went toe-to-toe with the Mustangs before Glassow hit a huge corner three and Ritter knocked down a jumper for a 68-64 lead at the 2:12 mark. UC Irvine kept the advantage and went on top 72-68 following a pair of free throws from Sutherland with 1:03 remaining.
Cal Poly (10-15, 6-7 Big West) then knocked down a three to make it a one-point game. UCI would run the shot clock down on the other end, and after a Ritter miss, Chavez snagged her biggest rebound of the night. Chavez was then fouled and calmly sank both free throws to give the 'Eaters a 74-71 edge with 17 seconds on the clock. Cal Poly had one more look to tie the game but Gabby Grupalo's attempt hit the front of the iron and Sutherland collected the board as time ran out.
UC Irvine (4-22, 2-10 Big West) struck first and went up 7-4 on a bucket from Sutherland at the 6:38 mark. The 'Eaters stayed out front until Cal Poly took its first lead of the game at 12-11. UCI answered with a Teirra Hicks layup but the Mustangs then closed out the first quarter on an 8-2 run to pull ahead, 20-15.
The Anteaters locked down on defense in the second period as they held CP to just four points over the first eight minutes. That allowed UC Irvine to go on a 19-4 run and push its advantage to 34-24 at the 3:14 mark. The Mustangs responded, however, scoring the final nine points to cut UCI's advantage to 34-33 at intermission.
The 'Eaters fell behind by three in the third frame, but came right back with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Bayman layup, to pull ahead 45-41 at the 4:04 mark. Cal Poly eventually tied it up at 46-46, before a Ritter 3-pointer put the visitors back on top as they went into the final 10 minutes of regulation with a 49-48 lead.
UC Irvine opened the fourth quarter on a 9-2 spurt, which ended with a Chavez jumper, to take a 58-50 lead with 6:33 to play. The Mustangs then started to chip away and tied it up at 58-all. Sutherland made a pair of free throws to give the edge back to the Anteaters with 54 seconds remaining. CP's Lynn Leaupepe answered with a jumper on the other end to even the score at 60-60, and neither team was able to convert on their final possession to send the game into overtime.
Cal Poly shot just 37 percent from the field and 61.9 percent from the charity stripe. Dynn Leaupepe paced the Mustangs with 25 points, while Hannah Gilbert added 20 points (9-of-11) and 11 rebounds.
UC Irvine returns to the Bren Events Center on Thursday, Feb. 23, when it plays host to Hawai'i at 7 p.m. It will be the Anteaters' Think Pink Night.
