THIS WEEK
The UC Irvine women's cross country team will make its first out-of-state road trip this week as it travels to Seattle, Wash., for the NCAA West Regional on Friday, Nov. 10. The women's 6000-meter race is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start at Jefferson Park Golf Course.
This is the third time in the last six years the NCAA West Regional will be held at Jefferson Park Golf Course (2012, 2015). Keely Boyd, Brenda Dorantes, Anastasia Karnaze, Olympia Martinez, Megan Mirkhanian and Jenessa Reyes are set to represent the Anteaters on Friday.
Karnaze and Dorantes are the only two 'Eaters who competed at last year's NCAA West Regional in Sacramento. Dorantes was the team's top finisher, covering the 6K course in 21:53.0, while Karnaze clocked in at 22:17.8. As a team, UCI placed 30th. Stanford won the meet, and was followed by Washington and San Francisco.
QUALIFYING PROCESS
Over 30 men's and women's cross country teams will be in Seattle to race for a spot on the starting line of the NCAA Cross Country Championships. A total of 31 teams will qualify for the national meet with 18 automatic bids (top two in each region) and 13 at-large bids. After the teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals per gender are selected to compete at the NCAA Championships, with the top-four finishers at each regional earning automatic qualification.
SOPHOMORE CORE
UC Irvine has a trio of sophomores who have been among the team's top five performers in every race this year. Anastasia Karnaze led the way in four of five meets, securing the No. 1 spot for UCI at the Big West Championships, Master's University XC Invitational, UC Riverside Invitational and Pepperdine Invitational. Her best showing came in the season opener in Malibu where she took fourth overall.
Keely Boyd and Brenda Dorantes have also consistently been in the Anteaters' top-five. Most recently, Dorantes stepped up as the team's No. 2 runner at the Big West Championships where she was 41st (22:28.8).
MAKING A STATEMENT
Senior Jenessa Reyes has made an immediate impact in her first cross country season at UC Irvine. At the Pepperdine Invitational, Reyes passed a couple Waves runners down the final stretch to give UCI a 26-29 victory over the host school. She also led the team at the Highlander Invitational with a 5K personal-record 18:30.8, while coming in second for the 'Eaters at the UC Riverside Invitational 6K (22:30.7) and the Master's University Invitational 5K (18:52.5). Reyes came to Irvine from Orange Coast College last year but only competed in outdoor track & field.
AND WE'RE OFF
UC Irvine finished eighth at the Big West Championships in Riverside on Saturday, Oct. 28. Anastasia Karnaze led the 'Eaters for the fourth time this season, coming in 39th with a 6K time of 22:22.4. Brenda Dorantes (22:28.8) and Jenessa Reyes (22:29.9) were not far behind in 41st and 42nd, respectively. Both of their times were season bests. Keely Boyd was UCI's No. 4 runner, clocking in at 23:39.1 (57th), while Megan Mirkhanian rounded out the team's scorers in 60th (24:05.3).
On Oct. 14, the Anteaters ran to 10th place at the Highlander Invitational. Reyes was UC Irvine's top finisher, registering a personal-record 18:30.8 over 5000 meters. Reyes, who shaved over 20 seconds off her previous best, was 41st overall.
The 'Eaters concluded the month of September with a runner-up performance at the Master's University XC Invitational in Santa Clarita. Karnaze led the way for the third time in as many races as she placed second among NCAA Division I athletes, and 13th overall, completing the 5K course in 18:13.1.
On Sept. 16, UCI finished 14th against NCAA Division I teams at the UC Riverside Invitational 6K. Karnaze was 90th out of 220 overall competitors (21:59.2), and Reyes added a career-best 22:30.7.
The Anteaters also went 4-1 at the season-opening Pepperdine Invitational (Sept. 1), defeating USC, Bakersfield, CSUN and Pepperdine, while falling to Long Beach State. Karnaze took fourth with a career-best 14:58.71 over 4000 meters.
