SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- Ioannis Dimakopoulos had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead UC Irvine over Cal Poly, 70-48, in a Big West Conference game at San Luis Obispo Wednesday night.
Dimakopoulos recorded his third double-double of the season as the Anteaters (12-9, 5-0) remained undefeated in the league at 5-0 and won their seventh straight game, matching a winning streak they had in January a year ago.
Tommy Rutherford added 11 points, Eyassu Worku scored nine and Jaron Martin eight. Martin and Jonathan Galloway had five rebounds apiece. Evan Leonard had six points and John Edgar Jr. scored five in three minutes.
Jakub Niziol led Cal Poly (5-13, 0-4) with 11 points while Alek Abrams had 12 rebounds and seven points.
UCI closed the first half on a 14-3 run to go up 31-22 at the break.
Cal Poly drew within five at 42-37 with 12:13 remaining in the game, but UCI quickly went back up by nine and pulled away, outscoring the Mustangs, 24-10, in the last 10 minutes of the contest.
The 'Eaters limited the Mustangs to just six second-half baskets as Cal Poly shot 24 percent from the field for the game while UCI hit 47 percent of its shots. The Anteaters had a 34-16 advantage in the paint and had a narrow 40-39 edge on the boards.
UCI's depth was evident again as the Anteaters' bench outscored Cal Poly's, 32-22. Both teams were in single digits in turnovers as the 'Eaters committed eight and the Mustangs nine.
"I thought we did what we needed to do to be solid on the road," UCI head coach Russell Turner said.
"Our big guys played well tonight and I feel we were able to impose our will defensively at times. The players did a good job of following our game plan."
The Anteaters won for the 66th time in the last 69 games when holding the opponents to 40 percent or below from the field.
