SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- UC Irvine suffered a second straight 1-0 setback Thursday night, this time against Santa Clara in Stevens Stadium.
The Anteaters (8-3) held their own in the first half splitting possession with the Broncos (4-4-2). Keeper Maddie Newsom shut down SCU's lone shot on goal coming up the left wing to keep the match scoreless.
The Broncos broke the silence in the 68th as a cross was one-timed home by Jenna Roering to give them the 1-0 advantage.
UCI pressured for the equalizer down the stretch, and had its best chance in the final minute. Alex Karlowitsch gathered the ball from 40 yards out right on target forcing Bronco keeper, Courtney Ogren, to leap and tip the shot over the net. The ensuing corner kick was cleared locking up the 1-0 win for Santa Clara.
Newsom handled two saves in net as the Broncos held the shot advantage, 9-6. The loss drops the Anteaters to 8-3 on the year and its first losing streak of the season.
UCI returns home for its non-conference finale against another WCC opponent, Portland, on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 2:00 p.m.
