UC Irvine Takes Third Place at Big West Championship

Santa Barbara, Calif. – No. 7 UC Irvine played their second extended game in two days as the Anteaters defeated No. 11 Long Beach State 7-6 in the second period of overtime.
The 49ers got out to a quick early lead scoring twice in the first quarter and kept the 'Eaters scoreless.
UC Irvine fired back right out of the gate in the second period with a shot by Keana Eldridge and less than a minute later Mary Brooks found the back of the net to tie it up 2-2.
LBSU drew a penalty on a power play and Tori Morrissey converted the 5-meter penalty shot to take the lead. The 49ers widened the lead when Virginia Smith got a shot off and the Anteaters were down by two at halftime, 4-2.
Brooks started off the third quarter converting on a power play to narrow the gap with the '49ers.
With 4:01 left in the third, Corinna Toledo scores one for the Anteaters, 4-4. Long Beach managed to shoot a goal with less than a minute on the clock putting UCI behind by one to start the final period.
The final quarter began with an LBSU power play that the 'Eaters' defense prevented from capitalizing on. Goalkeeper Annika Nelson would end up recording nine saves in the contest.
The Anteaters came back with their own power play and Brooks took advantage of the numbers to tie it up 5-5.
The final seconds of the fourth quarter proved full as LBSU's goalkeeper Alexis Butler stopped UCI's shot with less than a minute on the clock. The 49ers had possession and senior Emily Carlson came up with a big steal sending the game to overtime.
UC Irvine made the first move on the board in overtime with a goal by Natalie Seidemann. LBSU answered right back with one of their own knotting it all up, 6-6, to end the first overtime.
With :27 left in the second overtime Carlson found the back of the net to give the Anteaters the 7-6 lead. The 49ers final attempt on goal was high and the 'Eaters ended up with the third place win.
