Fullerton, Calif. – UC Irvine (3-13, 1-3) was defeated by Cal State Fullerton (16-3, 5-0) in a Big West conference match-up, 6-1. The Titans continued their unprecedented season with a win over the Anteaters for the first time since 1998.
Fullerton earned the doubles point and early 1-0 lead with wins at flight one and three leaving flight two unfinished. No. 1 Cal State Fullerton duo Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela defeated Andrea Duva and Vivien Dvali 6-0. No. 3 Sarah Gong and Ashlynn Hall played strong but ultimately fell short in a 7-5 loss to Sarah Nuno and Danielle Pham.
The Titans earned the first two singles points as No. 6 Duva fell to Pham 6-1, 6-0, and No. 1 Gong was defeated by Valenzuela 6-0, 6-3.
The 'Eaters were down 3-0 when sophomore Dvali overtook Nuno 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at the No. 2 singles spot to earn UCI a point and narrow the gap 3-1.
Cal State Fullerton continued to push forward by clinching the fourth and match winning point at flight five when Mazy Watrous was defeated by Masako Makiba 7-5, 6-3. The remainder of the matches played out and were taken by the Titans as No. 4 De Leon defeated Stephanie Hazell, and No. 3 Taylor LeFridge was defeated by Fullerton's Karla Portalatin despite a valiant effort made by the junior in the third set 6-3, 4-6, 11-9.
UC Irvine comes back home for Big West action on Saturday (April 9) against UC Santa Barbara at 12:00 p.m. at the Anteater Tennis Stadium.
