Irvine, Calif. -- No. 75 UC Irvine (15-7, 2-2) finished strong for the last home match of the season earning the 6-1 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Stags (19-3) rank third in division three action.
The Anteaters started up 1-0 after earning the doubles point. Duo Luca Marquard and senior Caryl Hernandez took flight three 6-1 over Skyler Butts and Daniel Morkovine. Claremont-M-S took flight one 6-4, with the point in the fate of flight two. Senior pair Justin Agbayani and Jonathan Poon earned a 7-5 win at the No. 2 spot to secure it for the 'Eaters.
UC Irvine earned the next five point in singles to secure the win. No. 3 senior Tyler Pham only lost three games in his 6-0, 6-2 win and senior Jonathan Hammel followed that up with a 6-3, 6-1 win at flight five.
No. 6 Vatsal Bajpai defeated Lestter Yeh 6-3, 6-2 and Marquard battled to win his match 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot over Glenn Hull.
Agbayani came up with the sixth point for the 'Eaters in a 7-5, 6-3 win at flight four. Senior Nico Mertens took his first set with Butts taking the second to force a third. Mertens eventually lost 6-3, 4-6, 3-6.
UC Irvine is on the road next week at Fresno State on Thursday (April 21) at 4:00 p.m.
