Irvine, Calif. – UC Irvine (14-7, 2-2) hosted No. 73 Cal Poly (11-8, 3-0) in conference play Sunday afternoon losing to the Mustangs, 4-1.
The match finally got under way at the Mesa Verde Tennis Club after a weather postponement on Saturday and a delay Sunday morning. With both teams ready to compete, Cal Poly took the doubles point with wins at flights two and three leaving flight one unfinished.
No. 3 duo Caryl Hernandez and Luca Marquard battled from a three-game deficit 4-1, but were not able to hold off Dan Cardiff and Karl Enander ultimately falling, 6-4. Jonathan Hammel and Tyler Pham worked a tight set at the No. 2 spot, but lost to Garrett Auproux and Tim Tan, 7-5.
The Mustangs took the first singles point as Sreyas Kolachalam defeated Jonathan Hammel 6-1, 6-2 at flight six. No. 4 Justin Agbayani quickly earned the 'Eaters a point in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Josh Ortlip.
Cal Poly continued with a win as Axel Damiens took the win at the No. 5 spot over Vatsal Bajpai, 6-3, 6-3.
No. 4 Tyler Pham came back after losing his first set to battle to a tie-breaker in the second set against Corey Pang. Pham eventually lost the tie-breaker and match 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) and the Mustangs clinched the fourth and final point. No. 1 Nico Mertens and No. 2 Marquard were both battling in third set action when the match ended.
UC Irvine will play their last home match of the season against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday (April 16) at 3:00 p.m. at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
