TAKING ON NO. 1
The Anteaters had another strong showing in a 7-3 loss to No. 1 USC at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center in Los Angeles, Calif. on March 11. The squads had most recently met at the UCI Invitational where the Women of Troy narrowly defeated the 'Eaters 11-10.
UC Irvine completed the first period with a 3-2 lead after Mary Brooks scored twice and Keana Eldridge put one in the goal.
Strong defense kept the 'Eaters in the game as they ended the first half tied 3-3, with seven steals including two each by Emily Carlson and Corinna Toledo. Goalkeeper Annika Nelson recorded six saves in the first half with a total of ten in the game.
USC was able to hold on in the third quarter and take the lead in the final three minutes of the period. Shot attempts by the 'Eaters in the final period came up empty and the Women of Troy were able to put a couple of more goals on the board to win the game 7-3, and remain undefeated on the season.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
No. 7 UC Irvine (11-8) is travelling to Hawai'i to take on No. 4 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (13-5) on Thursday (March 24) following a week off for final exams. UH most recently was defeated by No. 1 USC, 9-5. The Rainbow Wahine also competed in the UCI Invitational (Feb. 27-28) with a fourth place finish. This will be the first match-up between the teams this season. The 'Eaters went 2-1 with Hawai'i last season, with a 9-8 OT loss in the Big West Final.
While in Hawai'i, UC Irvine will compete against No. 10 UC San Diego (18-7) and No. 24 Bakersfield (13-12) at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex (DKAC).
UC San Diego Tritons saw their 11-game win streak come to an end with an 11-5 loss to Stanford on Sunday (Mar. 20). UCSD competed in the 2016 UCI Invitational with an 11th place finish. The 'Eaters last squared off against the Tritons at the Triton Invite (Feb 14) with a 5-3 victory over UC San Diego.
CSU Bakersfield recently took on No. 2 UCLA where they fell to the Bruins 6-1. The Anteaters last match-up against the Roadrunners occurred in the 2013 season with two games as the 'Eaters went 2-0 against CSUB.
