UC Irvine Takes on No.1 USC in 7-3 Loss

Los Angeles, Calif. – No. 6 UC Irvine battled No.1 USC at Uytengsu Aquatics Center in a 7-3 loss.
USC made their mark early scoring within the first fifteen seconds of the match. The Anteaters played strong defense with four steals in the first period including two by Emily Carlson, and with Corinna Toledo and Mackenzie Milham each forcing a turnover.
There was a lot of action in the last three minutes of the first period. At 2:35 left on the clock, Mary Brooks scored for the 'Eaters on an assist by Milham to tie it up, 1-1. UCI then took the lead with a goal by Keana Eldridge but the Women of Troy quickly answered back to even up the score. The Anteaters weren't finished and Brooks scored her second goal of the first quarter on an assist by Allie Loomis to give the 'Eaters the 3-2 lead as the period ended.
Defense kept the second period scoreless as Toledo, Brooks and Julie Swieca came up with steals until there was 2:47 on the clock and USC scored making it a 3-3 game at halftime.
UC Irvine remained scoreless in the third period as USC scored twice on power plays and recorded four saves heading into the fourth quarter up 5-3. Annika Nelson was put to work with a steal and four saves in the third quarter giving the junior a total of ten saves in the first three periods.
In the final period, USC scored twice within the first three minutes putting the Women of Troy up 7-3. That is where the score would remain as a couple of shot attempts by the 'Eaters came up empty.
No.6 UC Irvine heads to No.4 Hawai'i on March 24 (Friday) with a 9:00 p.m. match. The Anteaters will face No.11 UC San Diego and No.24 Bakersfield at Hawai'i on March 25 (Saturday) at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
