LA JOLLA, Calif. --- No. 9 UC Irvine roared back from an early deficit thanks to a seismic effort from sophomore Mary Brooks to trounce its rival Long Beach State, 9-7, to open the UCSD Triton Invite Saturday afternoon.
The 'Eaters fell into a 3-2 whole to LBSU (1-5) capped by a Tori Morrissey goal with eight seconds left in the first quarter.
UCI (4-3) would climb out of its rut as Natalie Seidemann would tie things up 55 seconds into the second period, and Mary Brooks would take over and put it into overdrive for the remainder of the period.
Brooks netted five goals in the period alone at the 6:32, 6:03, 3:57, 3:22, and 2:13 marks, interrupted only by a 49er at 2:49, and give UCI the 8-5 advantage heading into the half.
The teams crawled into the fourth quarter with just one goal to show for the third quarter, and Brooks would return with a sixth strike with 2:47 left to put the game away for good and give the 'Eaters the 9-7 win.
The six goals mark the seventh time an Anteater has accomplished that in a match, and first time since March of 2014 when McKenna Mitchell did it.
The win set UCI up with No. 7 UC Davis in the afternoon match at 5:50 p.m. to determine the group winner going into Sunday.
