'Eaters Go Cold in Sioux Falls

 

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- UC Irvine shot just 25.6 percent from the field in falling to Milwaukee, 54-37, at the Sanford Pentagon Showcase in Sioux Falls, S.D., Saturday afternoon.

The Anteaters (3-3) hit 11 of 43 shots, including 1 of 14 from three-point range. The Panthers (2-3) shot 37.9 percent from the field, hitting 7 of 19 treys.

Sophomore forward Jonathan Galloway had eight points and six rebounds for UCI while freshman guard Eyassu Worku also scored eight points and grabbed five boards.

Freshman forward Tommy Rutherford snared a career-high eight boards to lead the 'Eaters, who outrebounded the Panthers, 40-34.

Freshman guard Evan Leonard, who hit UCI's lone three, added seven points and five rebounds. Senior guard Jaron Martin scored six points.

Brock Stull led Milwaukee with 11 points and Brett Prahl added 10.

The Panthers led the entire game and built a 29-18 halftime lead on the strength of eight points from Prahl.

UCI closed to within nine on two occasions early in the second half, but a three by Milwaukee's Cody Wichmann with 16:49 left put the Panthers up 34-22 and they maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, leading by as many as 25 (54-29) late in the contest.

UCI committed 22 turnovers and Milwaukee outscored the 'Eaters, 24-10, off miscues.

The Anteaters finish play in the Pentagon Showcase Sunday, facing East Tennessee State at 9:30 a.m. (PT).
