Jaron Martin was named to the all-tournament team
at the Sanford Pentagon Showcase.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- Ioannis Dimakopoulos scored a career-high 21 points and Jaron Martin added 19, but UC Irvine fell to East Tennessee State, 72-66, at the Sanford Pentagon Showcase in Sioux Falls, S.D., Sunday.
Dimakopoulos was 7 of 14 from the field, including 3 of 5 from three-point range, and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds.
Martin hit 7 of 13 shots, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, and added five assists. He was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 14 points and 3.7 assists in three games.
Freshman forward Tommy Rutherford scored nine points, hitting all three of his shots, and added six boards. Freshman guard Evan Leonard scored seven points and redshirt freshman guard Max Hazzard had six for the Anteaters, who went 1-2 in the Showcase and are 3-4 on the season.
T.J. Cromer led ETSU (5-1) with 15 points and five assists as the Buccaneers won all three of their games in the weekend event.
Desonta Bradford added 14 points, six boards and four assists for ETSU.
UCI closed the first half on a 19-12 run to lead 34-31 at the break after shooting 57 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes as Dimakopoulos scored 12 of his points.
The 'Eaters extended their lead to eight points early in the second half, but an 11-2 run by the Buccaneers put ETSU up 46-45 on a basket by Bradford with 12:54 left.
Martin hit a jumper with 8:08 remaining to tie the game at 55-55, but the Buccaneers closed out the game with a 17-11 run, hitting 6 of 6 free throws in the final 26 seconds.
UCI, which outrebounded ETSU 34-31, shot 42 percent from the field to the Buccaneers' 47 percent. ETSU had an 18-11 edge on points off turnovers. The 'Eaters committed 18 turnovers and ETSU 15 in the game.
UCI travels to Santa Clara Wednesday night for a non-conference game at 7:00.
