Aggies Sweep Anteaters

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis topped UC Irvine 3-0 (25-22, 25-23-25-23) at The Pavilion Saturday.
The Aggies (14-14, 7-8) had more kills (54-46), but the Anteaters had more digs (52-46) and blocks (6.5-6.0). Each team had one ace.
UCI (11-18, 6-9) was led by Victoria Dennis and Harlee Kekauoha with 11 kills each. Kekauoha recorded a double-double with 10 digs. Loryn Carter had nine kills and Makayla Wolfe added seven kills. Shelley Anderson totaled 35 set assists, eight digs and two solo blocks. Arden Davis had a team-high 15 digs.
Lauren Matias paced UC Davis with a match-high 14 kills. Aima Eichie followed with 12 kills and five blocks and Kendall Walbrecht pitched in 10 kills.
The Anteaters trailed the Aggies by a couple of points in the first set until a great one armed dig by Arden Davis proceeded a kill by Makayla Wolfe to knot the score at 8-8. A solo block by Shelley Anderson and a kill by Victoria Dennis gave UCI its first lead 12-11. Anderson clamped down the net again and then fired an ace to put UCI up 16-14. A 3-1 run by UCD moved the Aggies in front 19-18. Three consecutive points by UC Davis extended the lead to 23-20 and the teams would sideout to end the game, 25-22.
UCI jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead and held the 9-4 advantage on a kill by Danielle Geiger. UCD chipped away and narrowed the score to 15-14 before Harlee Kekauoha pounded a kill to stop the momentum, 16-14. Back-to-back kills by Kendall Walbrecht gave the Aggies its first lead 19-18. UC Davis held the 23-21 advantage until a pair of kills by Loryn Carter deadlocked the score at 23-23. A kill and ace by the Aggies ended the set 25-23.
After UCI tied it at 6-6 on a block by Dennis and Geiger in the third set, UCD scored three in a row to open the 9-6 lead. A kill by Anderson and a block by Wolfe and Kekauoha narrowed the deficit to 18-17, but two Anteater errors followed to help UC Davis maintain a 19-17 lead. Another UCI block, a triple by Carter, Kekauoha and Geiger, brought the Anteaters to 21-20 down then a solo block by Geiger tied the set at 22 all. Two UCI swings would go long to give the Aggies the 25-23 victory and the match.
UCI will travel to UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday (Nov. 23) before finishing out the season next Saturday (Nov. 29) hosting North Texas at 1:00 p.m. at the Bren Events Center. UCI will celebrate seniors Shelley Anderson, Victoria Dennis, Arden Davis and Danielle Geiger before the match.
