Senior Sendoff A Success

IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine sent the seniors off with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-18) win over North Texas in the season finale at the Bren Events Center.
Senior middle blocker Danielle Gieger led all players with 16 kills, while hitting .483 (16-2-29) plus she added four block assists. Sophomore opposite Harlee Kekauoha recorded her ninth double-double of the year with 15 kills and 13 digs. Senior libero Arden Davis had a season-best 24 digs, while senior setter Shelley Anderson posted 47 set assists and 14 digs. Freshman Loryn Carter totaled nine kills and senior outside hitter Victoria Dennis added eight kills. Freshman Makayla Wolfe had a match-high five block assists.
UCI's blocking was key with a 12.5 to 6.0 advantage. The Anteaters (.219) held the Mean Green to a .112 hitting percentage, including a .000 (13-13-44) mark in the final set.
North Texas (13-19) was led by Holly Milham's 14 kills and 14 digs. Alexis Wright recorded 13 kills and Amanda Chamberlain and Jordyn Williams each had nine kills in the loss. Williams also had a team-best four blocks.
UCI held an 18-15 lead in the first set before a 10-4 North Texas run gave the Mean Green the 25-22 first set victory.
In the second set, North Texas jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and continued to lead 7-4. A North Texas service error was followed by kills from Danielle Geiger and Loryn Carter then an ace by Harlee Kekauoha to move the Anteaters in front 8-7. With the Mean Green leading 14-13, UCI would score six straight, including two kills by Geiger and Kekauoha and an ace by Makayla Wolfe, 19-14. The Anteaters ended the set scoring the final six points, four on North Texas attack errors.
A pair of kills by Kekauoha and a tip that found the middle of the court by Geiger knotted the third set at 13-13. NT would hold a 19-17 lead when a kill by Victoria Dennis and a Mean Green error would even the set again at 19-19. A triple block by Kekauoha, Geiger and Loryn Carter plus kills by Geiger and Carter put UCI ahead 23-21. A kill by Dennis finished the set 25-23.
UCI went on a 5-1 run in the fourth set to take the 13-10 lead. A blast down the line by Geiger and a block by Geiger and Shelley Anderson gave the 18-12 cushion. An ace by Wolfe sealed the victory, 25-18.
The Anteaters close the season with a 13-18 overall record.
