UC Irvine Tops San Jose State, 10-9

SARATOGA, Calif. --- Junior Ryan Warde tied his career high with four goals and UC Irvine never trailed in earning its first Golden Coast Conference win with a 10-9 victory over San Jose State Friday night at West Valley College in Saratoga.
Jack Trush and Ian Fleenor added two goals each for the 'Eaters, who improved to 9-8 overall and 1-1 in the GCC.
Warde scored all three UCI goals in the first quarter to give the Anteaters a 3-2 lead.
Trush scored twice and Fleenor connected on a power-play goal in the second period to put UCI up 6-4 at halftime.
Warde's fourth goal of the game gave the 'Eaters a 7-5 lead with 6:05 left in the third quarter, but the Spartans scored two straight to even the game at 7-7 with 1:44 remaining in the period before Fleenor hit another extra-man goal with 10 seconds left to put UCI ahead for good at 8-7 entering the fourth.
Foster Hoose scored a power-play goal with 6:29 remaining in the game for a 9-7 lead and after a SJSU goal pulled the Spartans within one, Jon Polos countered for the 'Eaters to push the lead to 10-8 before a late SJSU goal.
Finn Pardon led the Spartans (4-12, 0-2) with three goals.
UCI travels to UC San Diego for a non-conference game Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
