UC Irvine made a trip up the coast to hostile UC Santa Barbara Thursday night. After falling behind in the 10th minute, the 'Eaters boosted their play outshooting the Gauchos, 9-8, with five shots going on net. Alas, UCI would drop the match, 1-0, registering its second losing streak of four games this season.
Things turned around Saturday night finishing contests with the North at Cal Poly. A wildly different lineup got on the board first with a 28th-minute tally from Randall McDermott. A wild play in the 59th minute saw a possible Mustang goal saved off the line twice and get overturned by the official leading to Alex Waldron having to exit for Elliot Farmer. He would preserve the shutout and Jorge Lara headed home some insurance to snag the 2-0 win.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
The 'Eaters stay on the road to start things, but come back down south to get South Division play going at UC Riverside. The Highlanders are off to a 3-0-1 start to conference play winning its last three along with a home draw against UCSB. This coming after a 5-4 non-conference run that including wins over Santa Clara, USD, and ranked Gonzaga. The offense rates second in the conference and top 30 in the country with 21 goals and assists led by Romario Lomeli's four goals and six assists. Vincent Morales tops the conference with 65 saves, and his 1,231 minutes played are third in the NCAA.
UCI finally graces Anteater Stadium once again on Saturday with CSUN and its seven points. The Matadors got one point at CP and UCSB after dropping UCD and Sac State at home. CSUN went 3-4-1 in non-conference falling to ranked UCLA and Utah Valley along with New Mexico, but have wins over Tulsa and Air Force. They also excel on defense with Kevin Marquez stopping 60 shots, however he's only produced one shutout behind an offense averaging 1.1 goals a match. Juan Samayoa has four goals, but all on PKs. Bar Shem Tov has 10 more shots than any other Matador (23) for a team that only puts 41 percent of its 117 shots on target.
Trapper Keepers
Elliot Farmer and Alex Waldron continue to put in a team effort in the 2016 season. The pair each got in Saturday night, the second time this season, and just the sixth match since 2011 that featured both 'Eater keepers. They became the first pair of Anteater keepers to each record a save in the same match since Andrew Fontein and Justin Tucker on Oct. 23, 2011. It was the first combined shutout for UC Irvine since Nov. 4, 2001 when CJ Cooper and Cameron Rossi came together to beat CSUF
Name Calling
Head Coach Chris Volk mixed things up with the recent struggles starting Thursday with 2016 debuts of Corey Schramm, Logan Wyner, and Edgardo Molina as subs. Saturday followed the same path as Schramm and Wyner were input into the starting lineup, each earning their first career starts. In addition, Manny Acosta played his first collegiate minutes as part of the 2-0 victory.
Point Taken
UC Irvine finishes its North-South showdown earning just three points, which is currently tied for the final tournament spot. Since the Big West was split into divisions, the lowest number of points to make the tournament has been nine from UC Riverside in 2012. The average number of points from a third place team has been 12.1 over the four years.
Over Bearing
