Panthers Strike to Knockout Women's Soccer, 2-0
September 18, 2015 | Women's Soccer
MIAMI, Fla. --- UC Irvine endured a lightning delay of over an hour before it got going Friday night in Miami only to slide to Florida International, 2-0.
UCI (3-5-1) got off to the hot start putting up the match's first two shots before Madlen Weinhardt jumped on a through ball from Scarlet Montoya to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead after 26 minutes.
The 'Eaters kept coming, but fell down 2-0 off a lucky deflection for FIU that gave Alyssa Robinson a prime chance that she put home in the 43rd minute.
Florida Int'l flipped the tables in the second half taking nine of the 11 shots after trailing on the shot chart in the first half. Corey Tobin stepped up to keep UCI within striking distance making five of her six saves in the second period.
The Anteaters' best chance came in the 86th minute. Moments after Tatyana Garrett reentered the match, she found herself all alone in front of the keeper, but shoveled a shot just right of the net to leave UC Irvine scoreless in the 2-0 loss.
The 'Eaters did put four of their six shots on target led by Claudia Lopez breaking out on the offensive side with a pair of each. Panther keeper Nevena Stojakovic stopped all four shots on the evening.
The rain-soaked field didn't play too much of a part in a match that saw eight total fouls.
UC Irvine slides down the coast to Boca Raton on Sunday, Sept. 20 to finish its eight-match road trip against Florida Atlantic, a school that has coughed up a lead in a 2-1 loss tonight to Texas Tech.
