UC Irvine Loses In Straight Sets To No. 3 Texas
August 29, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
AUSTIN, Tex. --- After opening the season with a win against LSU, UC Irvine suffered its first loss (1-1) following a 25-13, 25-7, 26-24 loss to No. 3 Texas Saturday at Gregory Gym in continuing American Campus Classic action.
Harlee Kekauoha paced the Anteaters with seven kills with Sydney Wright tacking on six. Shelley Anderson posted 16 assists while Arden Davis shared the match-high with 10 digs.
UCI was unable to overcome a potent Texas team that out-blocked UCI, 11-5, while cruising with a .326 hitting percentage. The Longhorns jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first behind three service aces from Amy Neal and three unforced errors by UCI. The Anteaters would not threaten the Longhorn lead and would lose the set following back-to-back kills from Molly McCage.
The Anteaters did not fare any better in the second set, falling quickly behind 6-0. Texas registered 10 block assists and hit .550 to take a two-set lead.
UCI battled in the third, taking a 9-6 lead on a kill from Victoria Dennis that prompted a Longhorn timeout. The Anteaters stretched the lead to five (14-9) on a Texas service error. However, the Longhorns mounted a rally, erasing a 17-13 deficit by scoring six unanswered points (19-17). UCI used its final timeout and Anderson sparked the team with a kill and then an ace of Neal to knot the score at 19-19. Dennis extended the rally with a kill and Chloe Collins was called for a bad set that put UCI ahead, 21-19. The Anteaters held onto the advantage until Collins connected with Neal for a kill, who followed the play with a service ace (22-22). At 24-24, Texas delivered a timely block and Collins sealed the match with the team's seventh ace.
UCI will take on Rice University later today at 3:00 p.m.
