
Tommy Newton-Neal Leads 'Eaters Friday

IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior Tommy Newton-Neal registered UC Irvine's top finish on the first day of the 21st annual adidas/Steve Scott Invitational Friday.
He finished eighth of 24 runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:20.88 at Anteater Stadium. Eric Enriquez was 22nd in 10:21.97.
Alex Tebbe placed ninth of 56 competitors in the 5,000 meters in 14:34.34, Izzak Mireless was 12th (14:38.74), Nolan Del Valle 24th (15:10.96), Munir Kahssay 26th (15:12.81) and Blake Wanser 36th (15:37.44).
Jon Dickson placed 13th in the hammer throw at 140-3 and Mike Graf was 15th in the long jump with a mark of 21-6 while Matt Dispenza finished 25th at 19-0 ¾.
A stadium record was set in the 5,000 by Mauricio Gonzalez of Porvenir-Colombia, who won the event in 13:53.60, breaking the 39-year-old mark of 13:55.40 set by John Gregorio of the Chicago Track Club in 1976.
Action continues Saturday, beginning at 12:00 p.m. with track and field events.
