April 25, 2015 | Women's Water Polo
MANOA, Hawai'i --- Top-seeded UC Irvine earned another Big West Tournament final berth with an 8-6 victory over UC Davis Saturday evening at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
UCI (19-7, 4-1) responded from an early Aggie goal to finish the opening quarter with a 3-2 despite one combined save from each keeper.
Defense rose up on the second quarter with two goals between the squads to enter the half, 4-3, in favor of the 'Eaters.
Coming out of the half, Mary Brooks would extend the lead with her third goal for a two-goal advantage heading into the fourth quarter where keeper Jillian Yocum and her defense shut UC Davis (19-13, 2-3) out until the waning seconds for the 8-6 victory.
The 'Eaters have now reached all eight Big West finals in the existence of the conference and the tournament this time thanks to four goals from Brooks.
Head Coach Dan Klatt approved of her night. "She was huge," when referencing Brooks' play. "She definitely not afraid to step up, and she helped us get over the top tonight."
McKenna Mitchell added a pair along with UC Davis' leading scorer, Bryn Lutz.
Yocum stopped eight shots in net while the Aggies' Haley Cameron made seven saves.
UCI now draws the hosts, the Hawai'I Rainbow Wahine, for the final on Sunday, Apr. 26, at 9:00 p.m. for a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
