No. 5 'Eaters Slighted 6-5 on Senior Day to No. 11 UC Davis

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was unable to give its seniors a proper send-off falling, 6-5, to No. 11 UC Davis Sunday at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
UCI (17-7, 3-1) got things going rather easily with three first-period goals in the span of two minutes and took a 3-1 lead into the second period.
UC Davis (16-12, 2-3) fell down by three early in the period, but strung together a pair of late goals making it a 4-3 UCI lead at the half.
The Aggies continued their charge taking the lead with 4:40 left in the third at 5-4. The 'Eater offense woke back up 30 seconds later as Destene Albers slipped a shot through Aggie keeper Jillian Wilding tying the match as the it headed to the fourth.
Aggie senior Elsie Fullerton would step up in the final frame with the game-deciding goal with 7:22 remaining for the 6-5 lead. UC Irvine could never find the answer down the stretch turned away by Wilding five times and misfiring on a shot at center forward on the power play with under 20 seconds to go to seal its fate.
The 'Eaters' streak of 14 straight conference wins was snapped as well as its current eight-match win streak.
Each keeper finished with 10 saves. Wilding had eight in the second half while Jillian Yocum got seven of her 10 before halftime.
Fullerton and McKenna Mitchell each poured in a pair of goals on the afternoon. UCI's Gabby Pierandozzi had three assists and earned two exclusions. Albers added a pair of earned exclusions and two steals to her goal.
The 'Eaters still have a lot to play for Thursday night at No. 12 LBSU. A win would secure a Big West title at the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The squads square off at 7:00 p.m. in Long Beach Thurs. Apr. 16.
