Dramatic 'Eaters Cut Down No. 5 Sun Devils in Overtime

LA JOLLA, Calif. --- No. 6 UC Irvine reemerged to exact revenge on No. 5 Arizona State in the UCSD Triton Invite semifinal to top the Sun Devils, 10-9, in overtime Saturday afternoon.
UCI (5-2) started off great with a 2-0 lead after one period. The Sun Devils (8-1) regained their form to tie the match up, 3-3, entering the half.
Both squads jostled throughout the second half before McKenna Mitchel rose up in the final two minutes of the fourth period to score twice and regain the lead for UC Irvine. ASU tied it back up with 57 seconds to go and eventually send the match to overtime.
The first overtime went by rather uninterrupted, however, the Sun Devils broke the tie to take an 8-7 lead into the second overtime.
The Anteaters erupted in the second overtime scoring three consecutive goals including Mitchell's crushing blow with 15 seconds left to earn the 10-9 victory.
UCI and Arizona State battled three times in 2014 with each winning once before Arizona State took the final match for fifth place in the NCAA Tournament. The loss knocked the Sun Devils from the ranks of the unbeaten down to 8-1.
UCI will finish the UCSD Triton Invite with a shot at the title against No. 3 USC later on Sunday at 5:50 p.m.
