
'Eaters Fall to Tigers in MPSF Quarters

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- UC Irvine, playing its second game of the day, held even with No. 2 seed Pacific for three quarters before the Tigers pulled away in the fourth period for a 10-7 win in a quarterfinal game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at USC Friday afternoon.
The seventh-seeded Anteaters, who had dispatched of San Jose State in the opening game Friday, received back-to-back goals from Jack Trush (1:23) and Pablo Carballo (0:39) in the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead before the Tigers' Alex Obert converted a late goal to tie the contest at 5-5 at halftime.
Matt Skinner's goal with 6:34 remaining in the third gave the 'Eaters a 6-5 lead, but Pacific's Devon Thumwood tied the game at 6-6 on a score with 2:37 left and that's how it stood entering the fourth period.
The Tigers scored the first four goals of the final quarter on scores from Obert and three by Ben Stevenson to move ahead 10-6 before Skinner scored with 2:24 remaining for the final margin.
Skinner led UCI (15-11) with three goals and senior goalie Dylan Peterson made 12 saves. Obert and Stevenson led Pacific with three goals each.
The 'Eaters face UC Santa Barbara Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in a consolation semifinal game.
