Anteaters Unable to Complete Reverse Sweep, Fall to SJSU in Five

IRVINE, Calif. - After going down two sets to none, UC Irvine women's volleyball rebounded to force a fifth but were unable to complete the comeback in a 24-26, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19, 13-15 loss to San José State Sunday afternoon at the Bren Events Center.
The Anteaters came out strong, scoring the first four points of the match. They did not trail until late in the first set. It then went back-and-forth before the Spartans edged UCI, 26-24. The visitors kept the momentum in set two, but the 'Eaters regrouped at the break. Vani Tatoulian patrolled the net in the third frame where she had six block assists, while Nicole Feliciano had eight of her 14 digs in the fourth.
The decisive set was a seesaw battle with seven ties and three lead changes. UC Irvine used a 5-0 rally to go up, 9-7, but SJSU came right back with four unanswered. San José State then broke an 11-11 tie with a kill and a block, and held on for the 15-13 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS: Junior libero Whitney Wallace led all players with a career-high 30 digs. It was her second consecutive 20+ dig outing and third of the season. Wallace's 30 digs are tied for 15th in single-match school history.
Junior Madison Triplett had a match-high tying 17 kills. Freshman Taylor Boice was also in double figures with 10 to go along with five blocks. Freshman Vani Tatoulian recorded a career-high 10 blocks (1 solo, 9 block assists).
Senior Nicole Feliciano was just shy of a triple double, finishing with 16 assists, 14 digs, and eight kills. Sophomore Angelina Dellutri notched her second-straight double-double with 27 assists and 12 digs. Freshman Tata Vongfak added 13 digs, while freshman Memphis Burnett contributed six kills, five blocks, and four digs.
Morgan Graves led three Spartans in double figures with 17 kills. Fatimah Hall also had a team-high 23 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED: UC Irvine (1-8) started the first set with four-straight kills. The Anteaters maintained their four-point lead at 9-5 following a kill from Tatoulian. San José State then went on a 7-3 run to tie it up at 12-all. Boice answered with a solo block and the two teams traded points until back-to-back kills from Feliciano and Boice put the 'Eaters up, 18-16. SJSU responded with a 4-0 rally to flip the scoreboard, 20-18. Kills by Izzy Romero and Jessica Bates quickly brought UCI back even and the seesaw battle continued with the Spartans eventually taking the 26-24 win.
San José State (5-4) carried the momentum into set two where it raced out to a 15-7 lead. The Spartans went up by as many as 10 before the Anteaters put together a 4-1 spurt to close the gap to 23-16. SJSU then sided out and after a kill from Burnett saved set point, the visitors sealed the 25-17 victory.
UC Irvine regrouped at the break and used a 7-0 run, capped by a Dellutri ace, to go up, 10-2, in the third. San José State cut the deficit to two, but the 'Eaters would not relinquish the lead. They took set point at 24-20 and after three-straight by the Spartans, Burnett's cross-court kill ended it at 25-23.
It was all UCI in the fourth frame. Behind strong serving from Boice and Dellutri, the Anteaters went on an 8-1 run to pull ahead, 9-4. They led the rest of the way, finishing strong for the 25-19 victory.
The decisive set was a game of runs. After four early ties, it was the Spartans who created some separation, going up, 7-4. UC Irvine punched back with a 5-0 rally, capped by a Triplett kill, for a 9-7 lead. SJSU then scored four unanswered to go back on top by two, but Triplett's 16th and 17th kills of the match tied it back up at 11. San José State made the final push, coming away with the 15-13 win.
UP NEXT: UC Irvine closes out its non-conference schedule on the road, traveling to Las Vegas where it will face Southeastern Louisiana (Sept. 18) and UNLV (Sept. 19).
