IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior forward Mike Best poured in a career-high 22 points to lead UC Irvine over Loyola Marymount, 77-53, in a non-conference game at the Bren Events Center Sunday.
Best was 9 of 13 from the field and added a game-high eight rebounds as the Anteaters improved to 2-0 on the season.
Junior guard Luke Nelson scored 12 points and recorded five assists, four rebounds and he tied his career high with four steals.
Senior Dominique Dunning and sophomore Haroldas Saprykinas added nine points apiece. It marked a career high for Saprykinas.
Junior center Mamadou Ndiaye had seven points, six boards and four blocked shots while senior guard Alex Young registered seven points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Jaron Martin added six points.
Adom Jacko led LMU (1-1) with 17 points and Brandon Brown added 14.
Best scored 10 of his points in the first half as the 'Eaters led 39-25 at the break.
UCI shot 52.9 percent from the field in the game and hit 18 of 26 free throws. The 'Eaters limited the Lions to just 27.4 percent from the floor.
UCI outscored LMU in the paint, 38-14. The Anteaters had 12 steals and outrebounded the Lions, 42-36.
The 'Eaters have won 49 of their last 51 games when holding the opposition to 60 points or less.
UCI travels to UCF Wednesday for a game that will feature a matchup of two 7-6 centers, UCI's Ndiaye and the Knights' freshman, Tacko Fall. The contest from Orlando, Fla., will be on ESPN3 at 4:00 p.m. (PT).
