UC Irvine Stopped Cold by Stanford

 

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine came out on the short end of a defensive battle Sunday afternoon in falling to No. 5 Stanford, 7-0, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

UCI senior goalie Dylan Peterson did what he could do with 16 saves, including thwarting a penalty shot in the first quarter. 

Stanford goalkeeper Drew Holland was also up to the task, registering 23 stops to set an MPSF single-game record, according to the league office.

BJ Churnside led the Cardinal (18-6, 4-3 MPSF) with three goals and Bret Bonnani added two.

Churnside and Cody Smith scored first-quarter goals for Stanford, and Churnside and Bonnani tallied two more in the second period for a 4-0 halftime lead.

Bonnani scored on a penalty shot with 2:13 left in the third and Adam Warmoth followed with a goal with 50 seconds remaining in the period.

Churnside ended the scoring on a penalty shot with 4:28 left in the game.

Seventh-ranked UCI (11-9, 1-5) hosts Concordia University in a non-conference game Wednesday night at 7:00 at Anteater Aquatics Complex before hosting MPSF newcomer San Jose State Saturday at noon.
