UC Irvine Shutout for First Conference Loss
October 08, 2015 | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Women's soccer was unable to ride the momentum of a conference-opening win Thursday night in Northridge falling 2-0 to CSUN.
An even first half went by scoreless with neither team getting a significant edge. UCI (5-7-1, 1-1-0) had a pair of scoring opportunities started off with Alex Karlowitsch whose laser shot was deflected aside by CSUN keeper Cynthia Tafoya, one of her three saves, touching it off the post and wide in the 14th minute.
The 'Eaters came down once again the 22nd minute and nearly broke the tie again after Jenny Konishi lofted a ball off the wing and ringing it off the crossbar.
CSUN (8-5-1, 1-0-1) returned with their own crossbar shot minutes later as both squads pressured, but couldn't crack each other.
The Matadors broke the draw in the 54th minute with a deflected pass gifted to Cynthia Sanchez who finished to grab the 1-0 lead.
Sanchez was back at it in the 72nd minute jumping on a deep ball to put home her 10th goal of the season and make it 2-0.
UCI got a glimmer of hope after Breanna McCallum picked up her second yellow card a minute later to send her off and put the Matadors a woman down.
The Anteater push did not lead to a goal finishing the match at 2-0 and dropping the squad to 1-1 in the Big West.
Corey Tobin made four saves in net while six 'Eaters had multiple shots leading to a 15-13 shot advantage for UCI.
The next move is a return to Anteater Stadium next week hosting Cal State Fullerton (Fri. Oct. 16) and Long Beach State (Sun. Oct. 18).
