Late Strike Dashes Women's Soccer's Efforts
October 25, 2015 | Women's Soccer
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- The Anteater squad held the advantage for most of Sunday's contest at UCSB, but the Gauchos swiped victory in the waning moments winning 1-0.
Mallory Hromatko tracked across the box and smacked a shot from right to left past a diving Corey Tobin and inside the left post in the 88th minute to grab hold of the lead late.
UC Irvine (6-10-1, 2-4-0) had one last surge late earning a corner kick with 30 seconds left. Alex Karlowitsch flung it into the box and found Tobin who had been added to the mix. Her header traveled toward the right side of goal, but was snared by Gaucho keeper Beth Ritter to turning back the late rally and securing the 1-0 UCSB win.
Tobin's chance was one of five saved by Ritter of UCI's 10 shots on the afternoon. Kiana Palacios put up six of them, two on target, and the best chance of the afternoon in the 21st minute lobbing a high, twisting ball from the left flank off the corner of the frame.
UCSB (12-4-1, 5-1-0) had nine shots of its own with three being saved by Tobin. The Gauchos made most of their hay from the corner flag drawing seven corners on the afternoon.
The remaining road for UC Irvine is a treacherous one with two matches left, at Hawai'I and home vs. UC Davis, with no room for error. Wins in the final two matches are essential with the minimum amount of points necessary to make the Big West Tournament being 12 points.
The first stop is the big island against the Rainbow Wahine on Thursday, Oct. 29, where the Anteaters will get going at 10:00 p.m. Anteater time against a squad searching for its first conference win.
