
'Eaters Slip, 3-0, to South Division Leaders

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Men's soccer was stifled Saturday night in Titan Stadium to the leaders of the Big West South in a 3-0 defeat.
Cal State Fullerton (9-5-1, 4-4-1) wasted little time putting home its first shot of the match as Ross McPhie created a turnover at midfield and fed Brandon West for the 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
Both sides and chances to increase the scoring with Mats Bjurman's tying attempt near the end of the first half being smothered by Titan keeper David Rodriguez Elias.
CSUF countered with an unexpected volley as the half came to a close by Ronaldo Pineda that careened off the crossbar, and the score remained 1-0.
UC Irvine (3-9-3, 1-4-1) made a move to equalize in the second half earning four corner kicks, but managed just two shots, seven for the match, while the Titans continued to score.
Pineda got one to fall in the 60th minute directing another volley at the crossbar and tucking it up under to extend the advantage to 2-0.
McPhie got a goal of his own in the 73rd minute to make it 3-0, CSUF, and put the game out of reach.
The 'Eaters still remain in the tournament hunt sitting in third place in the Big West South, a point ahead of UC Riverside who fell to CSUN.
The offense did put four of its seven shots on target. Michael Breslin stopped two shots on his end.
UCI's road run continues next week with trips to UC Riverside on Wednesday and then at CSUN next Saturday, both matches beginning at 7:00 p.m.
