Box Score Long Beach, Calif. – UC Irvine opened the Big West schedule with a 57-40 loss at Long Beach State Thursday.
Senior Methlyn Onogomuho and sophomore Mokun Fajemisin led UCI with nine points each. Fajemisin also had three blocks and led all players with a career-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore Irene Chavez and freshman Tierra Hicks came off the bench to add seven points each.
The Anteaters went 18-58 from the floor and hurt themselves with 24 turnovers.
Devin Hudson posted a double-double for Long Beach State with 14 points and 11 rebounds in 18 minutes of action. Anna Kim had 13 points and Hallie Menseses followed with 10 points.
The Beach broke open the first half with a 10-0 run that included back-to-back three-pointers to take a 26-12 lead at 3:18. The Anteaters would narrow the margin to 27-18 with 17:38 left in the game before Long Beach State responded with another 10-0 spurt to open a 37-18 advantage at 14:55. UCI would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
UCI goes to 3-13 overall and 0-1 in the Big West, while LBSU extends its winning streak to 12 games and improves to 14-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
UCI will travel to UC Riverside Saturday (Jan. 10) for a 5:00 p.m. game at the SRC Arena.
