Pivotal Season Opener Goes to No. 6 'Eaters, 9-6

PALO ALTO, Calif. --- UC Irvine was put to the test in its opening match against seventh-ranked San Jose State coming away with the 9-6 win to open the Stanford Invitational.
The Anteaters (1-0) started strong with a pair of center forward scores to lead 3-1 after a period.
The Spartans (8-1) didn't back down holding UCI in the second period and evening the score to enter the half tied at 3-3.
UCI regrouped offensively in the third period to score four times including a dagger by McKenna Mitchell with 12 seconds remaining for her second of the match to put UCI up, 7-5, entering the final period.
Defense prevailed in to close out the match as UCI built a four-goal lead before settling on a 9-6 victory.
Mitchell along with fellow two-meter Mackenzie Milham and senior Emily Carlson each scored a pair to lead the squad. SJSU's Clara Espar Llaquet led all scorers with four. Freshman Mary Brooks put home her first career collegiate goal.
Jillian Yocum stopped four shots while her offense peppered the Spartan cage forcing Katelynn Thompson to stop 14 shots.
Head Coach Dan Klatt earned win No. 200 in his illustrious coaching career.
UCI goes up against the top-ranked hosts and defending champions in Stanford later today at 3:45 p.m.
