IRVINE, Calif. --- The Anteaters continue to improve over the offseason with the additions of CSU Bakersfield transfers, Eduardo Calzada and Mario Ortiz.
Eduardo "Lalo" Calzada led the Roadrunners in scoring last year as a sophomore with six goals and 14 points. He made 15 starts as a midfielder adding a pair of assists and was named WAC Player of the Week once. He had a goal and two assists as a freshman where he played in 14 matches. Originally from South Los Angeles, Calif., Calzada attended Roosevelt High School where he netted 19 goals and assisted seven others as a senior. He also played club soccer with Pateadores Soccer Club and South Bay Force.
Mario Ortiz also played in 18 matches in 2013 as a freshman where he started 14 of them and recorded five assists. The midfielder was recently honored by making the TopDrawerSoccer.com's Preseason Best XI Third Team. He also hails from Los Angeles, Calif. and attended Leuzinger High School where he was a four-time all-league selection. In addition to Pateadores and South Bay Force, Ortiz was also a Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA Academy member.
Head Coach Chris Volk was high on each player calling Ortiz, "a very creative and skillful midfielder whose ability to maintain possession and initiate the attack will be a welcome addition in the midfield." Calzada's impact will be felt by adding, "depth and speed to the team's attacking style of play," Coach Volk mentioned while being, "a proven goal scorer will help the team immediately."
The pair is the only four-year transfers on the squad. Other transfers Edgardo Molina and Gerardo Gonzalez come from the junior college ranks. They will all get the season going Mon. Aug. 18 with an exhibition match at Anteater Stadium against Cal.
