LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Sixth-seeded UC Irvine put up a fight, but fell three goals short to the host and defending champ USC Trojans Friday afternoon, 14-11, at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
The Anteaters (24-8, 5-0) defended well early on led by keeper Jillian Yocum who brought down four shots in the opening period. USC (25-3) managed just a pair of goals with one coming on a penalty.
Sophomore Cambria Shockley gave the 'Eaters some life with a sharp, skip-strike with two seconds to go in the quarter to close the deficit to 2-1.
The UCI scoring came alive in the second, never letting the Trojans get away from them, which included another last-second strike to end the half by Jessy Cardey to make it a 6-4 game.
USC put a little distance between them and UCI with the first three third-period goals and five in total.
UC Irvine finished strong with five of its own in the fourth quarter brandishing a final result of 14-11.
Yocum stopped 11 shots in total while Flora Bolonyai of USC had six saves. Yocum also added a pair of steals.
Monica Vavic led all players with three goals for USC. The Trojans had 10 goal scorers in total.
The 'Eaters had four players score a pair on the match including Cardey who upped her career total to a program-record 220.
Danielle Warde had a goal, three assists to lead the team, and a steal and field block on the defensive end. McKenna Mitchell earned four exclusions to lead all players.
The 'Eaters continue its NCAA Tournament on Sat. May 10 with a 12:00 p.m. match at Uytengsu Aquatics Center against seventh-seeded UC San Diego.
