IRVINE, Calif. --- Four members of the UC Irvine men's track and field team are in Fayetteville, Ark., this week for the NCAA West Preliminary Round
Freshman Isaiah Thompson is competing in the 800 meters with the first round scheduled for Thursday (May 29) at 6:10 p.m. (PT) at John McDonnell Field. Twenty-four runners from the first round will advance to the quarterfinal Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Thompson has a top time of 1:49.87 that he recorded at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational May 3 to finish seventh of 66 competitors.
Junior Mason Miller also competes Thursday in the shot put at 12:00 p.m. (PT). He has a top mark this season of 58-2 ½, which ranks No. 2 in UCI history. Miller had that effort at the Cal/Nevada Championships April 4 in La Jolla, where he finished third.
Freshman Lloyd Sicard and senior James Douglas are competing in the 110-meter hurdles at Fayetteville.
The first round is at 3:00 p.m. (PT) Friday and 24 runners from that round will advance to the quarterfinal Saturday at 5:05 p.m.
Sicard, the Big West Freshman of the Year, has a top time this season of 14.01 that ranks third in Anteater history. He finished second with that time in the Big West Conference Championships final May 17 at Davis.
Douglas has a best time in 2014 of 14.25 that ranks No. 7 in the UCI record book. He ran that time in the prelims of the Cal/Nevada Championships April 4 in La Jolla.
The top 12 finishers in each event from the West Preliminary Round will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 11-14
The East Preliminary Round is being held this week in Jacksonville, Fla.
