No. 3 Trojans End No. 6 'Eaters' Streak, 16-5

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The Anteaters' seven-match win streak came to an end Sunday afternoon at Uytengsu Aquatics Center after third-ranked USC handed UCI a 16-5 defeat.
The Trojans (21-1) were coming off its first loss of the season last week and got the scoring started in the first minute thanks to Monica Vavic. Danielle Warde would tie it up in the next possession. The 'Eaters (18-7, 2-0) hung with USC early after Hannah Croghan's strike with a minute remaining in the period chopped the lead down to 3-2.
The Trojans would respond with the next seven goals including all six in the second period as USC drove ahead 10-2 at halftime.
UC Irvine crawled back in with a pair of goals from Annika Bergesen and Jessy Cardey to climb to within six halfway through the third period. Cambria Shockley blasted home a hook shot as the period wound down to make it 13-5, but USC would shut out the 'Eaters through the final period to finish off the 16-5 defeat.
Jillian Yocum earned three saves in the start before giving way to Annika Nelson with two minutes remaining in the first half. Nelson finished with four saves and allowed seven of the 16 goals in 18 minutes.
The 'Eaters earned 10 exclusions in the match including a pair from Hillary Estrada, Annika Bergesen, and McKenna Mitchell. Estrada added an assist and a steal as well as Kelsey Thornton.
UCI now stands at 18-7 on the season, and takes its 2-0 Big West record back on the road next week with trips to No. 15 UCSB (Sat. Apr. 12) and an No. 7 CSUN squad (Sun. Apr. 13) who remains undefeated in conference play.
