UC Irvine Collects Fifth Big West Title

IRVINE, Calif. --- The sixth-ranked Anteaters' 10-7 win over No. 10 Long Beach State meant a little more as UCI clinched its fifth Big West regular season title and fourth in a row Thursday evening at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
UCI (21-7, 5-0) created a little space in the first period with a 3-1 lead. Jillian Yocum and the defense stood tall to end it with help on field blocks by Hannah Croghan and Danielle Warde to kill the penalty.
Long Beach State (18-10, 2-3) reel the 'Eaters in scored twice in the first three minutes of the second period to tie it 3-3. Warde's third of the match along with a tally by McKenna Mitchell took the 'Eaters into the half up 5-3.
The 49ers never let UC Irvine out of its sights thanks in large part to Coriann Snyder who scored five times and even early a penalty shot attempt, but in the end, UCI finished off LBSU in the final period with the 10th and final goal from Destene Albers.
Warde led the 'Eaters with four goals and added three steals, two assists, a field block, and exclusion earned. Jessy Cardey skipped a goal in while assisting on two and stealing three.
Elsewhere, Mitchell and Michaela Pierandozzi earned a pair of exclusions. Hannah Croghan recorded a pair of field blocks. Senior Annika Bergesen even won all three of her sprints on the night while contributing with a goal and two steals.
In net, Jillian Yocum stopped eight shots and picked up a steal. Kelly Ringel on the LBSU end stopped six.
UCI finishes the regular season on Fri. Apr. 18 with another 7:00 p.m. match as it hosts No. 12 LMU at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
