TWO IN VEGAS: Coach Russell Turner's UC Irvine squad, 4-5 on the season, competes in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic Sunday and Monday at the South Point Arena.
The 'Eaters face Bradley Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and will meet either Green Bay or UALR Monday at 11:00 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.
Bradley is 4-6 on the season, Green Bay is 8-2 and UALR 4-4. Green Bay is ranked No. 6 in this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
ANTEATER NOTES: This is the 50th season of the UC Irvine men's basketball program…UCI was the consensus preseason favorite to win the Big West Conference…UCI returns four starters off last season's team that finished 23-12 overall and 13-3 in the Big West, winning the program's first conference regular-season title in 12 years. The 13 league wins were the most for UCI in the past 11 years. The Anteaters lost at top-seeded SMU, 68-54, in the 2014 NIT First Round…the Anteaters are in the midst of four straight games away from home for the second time this season…following the two games in Las Vegas, UCI travels to Oregon Dec. 29…UCI's next home game is against Hampden-Sydney (Coach Turner's alma mater) Dec. 31 at 2:00 p.m.…UCI has lost its last two games, including 63-62 at Morgan State Tuesday night…as of Friday, of 355 teams ranked, UCI is 41st in the nation in blocked shots per game at 5.1 and 71st in field-goal percentage (.468)…senior forward Will Davis II has 1,035 career points, becoming the 24th member of the UCI 1,000-point club…he ranks ninth in UCI history with 663 career boards…junior guard Alex Young is fifth in UCI history with 334 career assists…Young had a career-high six steals in the Dec. 13 loss to UT Arlington, including five in the first 5:16 of the game…senior guard Travis Souza tied his career high with seven rebounds in Tuesday's loss at Morgan State…7-6 sophomore center Mamadou Ndiaye, who is averaging 12.0 points per game, has missed the last four games with a sprained foot…he is shooting 69.4 percent from the field…sophomore guard Luke Nelson, UCI's leading scorer at 12.3 points per game, missed the Morgan State game Tuesday due to the flu…Nelson was Big West Conference Freshman of the Year last season…senior post John Ryan is 17 of 24 (.708) from the field in the last four games and he is shooting 64.4 percent for the season.
UCI-BRADLEY SERIES: The series between the Anteaters and Bradley got off to a wild start in the 1980s.
In the first meeting, UCI prevailed 121-111 at Crawford Court Dec. 1, 1986.
Scott Brooks (OKC Thunder head coach) led four UCI 20-point scorers with 28 points. Hersey Hawkins scored 32 for Bradley.
The next season in Peoria, Ill., Hawkins scored 51 points in 30 minutes and Anthony Manuel had 21 assists as Bradley won 139-119. Hawkins' son, Corey, currently plays for UCI's Big West rival, UC Davis.
Wayne Engelstad led UCI with 41 points in the loss at Peoria and Frank Woods added 25.
Bradley led 68-63 at halftime and outscored the 'Eaters, 71-56, in the second half.
In the third game of the series, Gerald McDonald scored 21 points and Ricky Butler 18 to lead UCI past Bradley, 94-85, in the championship game of the Disneyland/Freedom Bowl Classic at the Bren Events Center Dec. 1, 1990.
Curtis Stuckey led Bradley with 29 points.
UCI won the fourth meeting of the series, 61-57, in overtime at Peoria Dec. 21, 1991. Elgin Rogers led the 'Eaters with 19 points and Jeff Von Lutzow added 15. Von Lutzow banked in a three with 58 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
James Hamilton led Bradley with 21 points.
