
Katelyn Ciarelli Promoted to Associate Head Coach at UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. --- Katelyn Ciarelli, in her sixth year as a member of the UC Irvine track and field coaching staff, has been promoted to associate head coach, announced by head coach Jeff Perkins
"Katelyn has worked extremely hard during her time as an assistant coach at UC Irvine and I am elated to be able to award her with this promotion," Perkins said.
"We are very excited for the future of the program with the level of commitment and success she has demonstrated. With Katelyn as an associate head coach, we are looking forward to having our program continue to build on her skills and success," Perkins added.
Ciarelli served as an assistant coach for the past four seasons after joining the UCI staff as a volunteer assistant for the 2009-10 season.
She works primarily with the throwers and during her tenure at UCI, three school records have been set on the women's side in the shot put (53-9), discus (170-2) and hammer throw (168-0).
Under Ciarelli's guidance in 2014, Itos Aikhionbare won Big West Conference titles in the shot put and discus, and was named Big West Field Athlete of the Year. Lacey Surak won the past two conference titles in the javelin throw.
At UCI, Ciarelli has produced nine NCAA qualifiers, 12 All-Big West honorees and three Junior All-Americans.
Ciarelli was a two-time Big West Conference champion in the discus at Long Beach State, winning league titles in 2006 (154-5) and 2008 (163-6). She placed fifth in the discus at the 2008 NCAA West Regional and competed at the NCAA Championships that year with 171-5. Ciarelli competed in the shot put, discus, hammer, javelin and weight throw while at Long Beach State. In 2006, she scored a total of 19 points at the Big West Conference Championship.
After graduating from Long Beach State, Ciarelli served one season (2008-09) as assistant throws coach at Concordia University in Portland, Ore., where she worked alongside Mac Wilkins, the 1976 Olympic gold medalist in the discus and 1984 silver medalist.
Ciarelli, who earned her master's in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University, Irvine, in 2010, has her undergraduate in sociology.
