November 26, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
LONG BEACH, Calif. --- UC Irvine was held to a .070 hitting percentage and suffered a straight-set loss to 16th-ranked Long Beach State Wednesday night at the Pyramid.
Cassidy Pickrell led the Anteaters with 12 kills while Victoria Dennis added 11 kills. Arden Davis led all players with 19 digs while Shelley Anderson recorded a match-leading 30 assists and led the team with two aces.
Dennis delivered a sharp-angled kill to cap a three-point run and give UCI an 8-5 lead in the second set, forcing a 49er timeout. The Anteaters stretched the margin to six points at 12-6 on the ace by Anderson but LBSU rallied to close the gap to two points at 12-10 as the 49er block of Ashley Murray and Janelle Hudson delivered on Lee. Long Beach State tied the match on the dump by Hudson and took its first lead of the set as Manz's attempt went wide on the next play. UCI used its second timeout to regroup but Tyler Jackson prevented an Anteater rally by acing UCI on consecutive plays (23-20). Dennis was blocked by the duo of Murray and Hudson to give LBSU set point and Manz's attempt on the following attempt fell wide to close the frame.
LBSU edged out in the third, taking a 9-5 lead on a kill down the line by Bre Mackie and an unforced error by Dennis. However, the Anteaters made a dent in the deficit, closing the gap to one at 9-8 as Hudson's attempt just dropped wide. The Beach then mounted a 5-1 run, capped by consecutive kills from Alex Reid as the 49ers built a 14-9 advantage. UCI came to within two at 15-13 after a Reid swing flew long and Lee crushed a cross-court kill. The LBSU block, which posted a 12-4 advantage, came through on back-to-back plays as the 49ers upped the lead to 21-16 and would score the final four points of the match to complete the sweep.
The Anteaters will take on CSUN this Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
