LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- A back-and-forth game that included six ties was decided late in overtime as ninth-ranked UC Irvine fell to No. 8. UC San Diego, 8-7, in the SoCal Tournament at Spieker Aquatics Center on the campus of UCLA Saturday morning.
The contest was tied 4-4 at halftime and the 'Eaters took a 5-4 lead after three quarters as Lovre Milos scored the lone goal of the period.
UCSD's Josh Stiling opened the fourth-quarter scoring on a goal with 6:03 left to knot the score at 5-5 before Kyle Trush answered at the 4:19 mark to push UCI ahead again at 6-5.
Matt Michalk scored for the Tritons with 3:28 remaining in regulation to send the game into extra time.
UCI's Larson Pfeil scored the only goal in the first three-minute period of overtime, but David Higginson scored a pair of goals for UCSD in the second three-minute extra session, including the game-winner on a power play with 35 seconds left.
Lovre Milos led the 'Eaters (10-5) with three goals, lifting his season total to 61, while Dylan Peterson made 15 saves in goal.
Stiling and Higginson scored twice each for UCSD (7-6).
This was the second one-goal game of the season between the teams as the Tritons claimed a 10-9 win at the NorCal Classic in Stockton Sept. 20.
"We were terrible with finishing high-percentage shots in front of the cage," UCI head coach Marc Hunt said. "It cost us the game.
"Defensively, we held them where we wanted them. Our goal was to hold them to 5-6 goals in regulation.
"If we want to win close games, we must finish easy shots."
UCI faces St. Francis Brooklyn Saturday at 1:40 p.m.
