
Anteaters Topple High Point At Cleveland State Invitational

CLEVELAND, Ohio --- Aly Squires and Allison Lee spearheaded the UC Irvine (5-0) offense with a pair of double-doubles as the Anteaters made it five consecutive wins with a 25-15, 31-29, 25-18 sweep of High Point Saturday morning at the Cleveland State Invitational.
The Anteaters hit a season-best .315 as a team. Squires led all players with 17 kills to go along with 12 digs and totaled just two errors in 46 tries for a .326 hitting percentage. Lee chipped in 14 kills and a match-high 16 digs, a career-best for the junior. Marisa Bubica knocked down 12 kills and had two miscues in 24 attempts to lead the Anteater attack with a season-high .417 percentage. Hannah Nabbout fired a career-high five service aces to tie for eighth in the UCI single-match records while Shelley Anderson dealt out 29 assists with seven digs.
With a 2-1 Anteater lead, Nabbout stepped to the end line and served for seven straight points, acing the Panthers twice in the run. A kill by Chelsea Davis briefly halted UCI's run but the Anteaters easily held off High Point as Arielle Manz and Bubica blocked Kristin Heldt for the win in the first set.
High Point opened the second frame with a 4-0 run but the Anteaters responded with three straight kills from Squires to grab the lead at 10-7 and prompt a Panther timeout. The set proved to be a close battle with 17 ties. A kill from Katie Vincent and an attack error by Lee gave the Panthers a brief two-point edge at 19-17 but Squires' kill was followed by an error by Vincent , tying the game at 19-19. Both sides rallied and at 29-29, Bubica put the ball away on an overpass to give UCI set point and then posted the kill on the assist from Nabbout to give the Anteaters a two-set lead.
UCI continued its momentum in the final set, storming out to an 11-5 lead on three straight service aces from Shannon Fleming. The Anteaters led by as many as eight points (18-10) and following Nabbout's fifth ace, the defensive specialist found Lee for the final point.
The Anteaters close out weekend action today at 4:00 p.m. against Cleveland State.
