SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- UC Irvine (9-6, 0-1 ) opened up the Big West Conference schedule with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-11 loss after being held to a season-low .074 hitting percentage by Cal Poly Friday.
Marisa Bubica led the offense with eight kills while Arielle Manz chipped in five to go along with a team-leading four block assists. Shelley Anderson owned the top hitting percentage at .429, putting away three of seven attempts while dishing out 22 assists and Arden Davis picked a match-high 13 digs in the effort.
Cal Poly jumped out to a 5-1 lead but back-to-back service aces from Shannon Fleming gave UCI a 10-9 lead and forced the Mustangs to take a timeout. Out of the huddle, Aly Squires and Manz blocked Hannah Schleis to give UCI a two-point lead but Cal Poly eventually opened up a four-point advantage at 17-13 on an attack error from Manz. UC trimmed the deficit to one at 22-21 on an attack error by Megan McConnell but the Mustangs rebounded by out-scoring UCI 3-1 to take the first set.
The Mustangs used a .267 hitting percentage in the second frame to jump out to a 10-6 lead and never looked back. The lead extended to five at 19-12 on a kill from McConnell and Chelsea Hardin would deliver the winning kill on set point to give Cal Poly a two-set lead.
The Anteaters were unable to turn the tide and the Mustangs hit .619 in the final frame. Cal Poly went on an 8-1 run to open the set and led by as many as 12 at 21-9 on a kill from McConnell. Maddie Kuber connected with Hannah Schleis to end the match, handing UCI its third sweep of the year.
