UC Irvine will participate in the Lady Griz Classic hosted by Montana this Friday and Saturday (Dec. 6-7) in Dahlberg Arena.
The Anteaters will open up against Appalachian State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. PST followed by Idaho against Montana.
Montana will play the second game on Saturday, no matter the result of the Montana-Idaho game on Friday. Winners will play winners, losers will play losers on Saturday.
Entering the season, Missoula was ranked third all-time in toughest places to play in the country with a 484-69 record (87.52%), while the Grizzlies' home court, Dahlberg Arena, was the sixth toughest venue with a 475-63 (88.29%) mark.
This will be the first meeting between UCI and Appalachian State.
The Mountaineers enter the week 1-4 overall and will play at North Carolina A&T Wednesday before heading to Montana. Appalachian State opened Southern Conference action with a 71-63 loss to Western Carolina last week.
The Anteaters are 0-2 against Montana all-time, losing the last contest 76-64 on Dec. 12, 1987. The Lady Griz are 4-1 this season. Montana lost to North Dakota State and beat Loyola Marymount last week at the LMU Thanksgiving Classic.
Idaho went 1-2 at the Nugget Classic, beating host Nevada then losing to No. 20 Cal, 59-55 in the championship game. The Vandals are 4-3 overall and will play NAIA opponent Carroll College on Tuesday.
Idaho holds a 13-7 advantage in the series record over UC Irvine, beating the Anteaters 68-63 on Nov. 23.
UCI's Madison McKenney led all players, going 7-10 from the field including 5-5 from three-point range to post her career-best 22 points in the loss to Idaho. Camille Buckley recorded 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Vandals were led by Stacy Barr with 21 points, hitting 9-15 from the free throw line. She also added a game-high 16 rebounds. Addie Schivo and Christina Salvatore each had 14 points and Alyssa Charleston recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
UCI is towards the end of a nine game road trip, playing 11 of 14 non-conference games away from the Bren Center. The Anteaters will travel to Sacramento State on Dec. 14 before finally returning to Irvine on Dec. 18 to take on New Mexico State.
The Anteaters have started the year 4-2 overall for the first time since the 2002-03 season when the club began the year with a 5-1 mark.
Last week, UCI split a pair of games, beating Loyola Marymount 78-73 then falling to North Dakota State 64-61.
Camille Buckley and Jennifer Tsurumoto were named to the all-tournament team.
Buckley recorded her third double-double of the year with 14 points and a season-high 16 rebounds. She totaled a team-best 15 points to go with six boards versus North Dakota State. For the year, the forward leads the team with a 15.6 points and 10.4 rebounds average. She ranks 10th in scoring and third in rebounding among Big West players.
Tsurumoto had a team-high 16 points in the win over the Lions then added 14 points against the Bison. She tied her career-high in assists with five in each game last week. The guard is second on the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game which is ranked 13th in the Big West. She is sixth in the league in three-pointers made (1.86) and 10th in free throw percentage (.788) and assists (3.14).
Methlyn Onogomuho caught fire last weekend. She averaged 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds and shot .500 from the field over two games. She tied her career-high with 16 points against North Dakota State.
UCI leads the Big West in field goal percentage defense at .359 (157-437) and are tied in offensive rebounds (17.28).
